Programme

Structure and content

The courses are structured into three components:

  • LD, Landscape Design
  • LS, Landscape Sciences
  • LT, Landscape Techniques

They are distributed over three semesters, the reasoning being that in every semester they are combined with laboratory courses in which issues in landscape planning are dealt with, from the simpler to the more complex, from small to large scale and from built and strongly artificial environments to natural ones.

Postgraduate students are provided in good time with basic knowledge and techniques, so that they are able to complete subjects of progressively an increasing complex and coordinative nature. Obligatory courses are also combined with optional courses, by semester, so that cognitive omissions due to different directions in under-graduate studies can quickly be repaired. An exception is linear and free-hand drawing, since knowledge of and skill in this are pre-requisite and are a sine qua non in the selection of agriculturists.

Thus, the first semester covers the theory, critical appreciation, and history of landscape architecture, the architecture and design of environmental spaces or of small scale landscapes, the design of gardens and parks, ecology and the recognition and knowledge of plants and techniques for planning and constructing landscapes.

The second semester focuses on the design of urban landscapes. The urban open spaces design is covered in a basic laboratory course. The courses in urban design and urban and regional planning, in humanities such as environmental psychology, sociology, economy, statistics, and in geotechnical sciences such as soil science, climatology, and the use of plants in landscape architecture, either cover basic cognitive fields or investigate them in depth, depending on  the candidates’ undergraduate work. Courses in CAD, LandCADD and GIS complete the technical dimension.

The third semester focuses on natural spaces, with the planning of the suburban, rural and natural landscapes, and courses are also offered on ecological planning and sustainable development, on landscape preservation, restoration and rehabilitation, and on technical works and landscape projects as well as on special facilities and landscape projects, such as road, housing,  tourist, sports, archaeological and cultural works.

In the fourth semester, the composition of the dissertation is completed. This deals either with a theoretical issue or a project which students work on throughout their whole of their course and which they undertake no later than the second semester.
